Frequently Asked Medical Questions

It is always recommended that you bring your pet in for an exam if it looks ill.

Why is my dog scooting on the ground/licking its rear end?

Scooting or licking are signs that your pet may need its anal glands expressed or have intestinal parasites. An appointment should be made to express the anal glands and a fecal sample should be checked for parasites.

Why is my dog shaking its head so much?

Head shaking can be a sign of an ear infection. Your pet should be examined and a sample from your pet's ear should be looked at under a microscope to make a diagnosis before instituting a treatment plan.

At what age will my pet come into heat?

Your pet can go into heat any time after 6 months, you should call the clinic to schedule a spay before this time (5-6 months).

What are some possible causes for my pet's loose stool and do they need to be seen?

There are many causes of loose stool including food change, intestinal parasites and stress. You should call to schedule an appointment to determine the cause. Changes in food should be done gradually to not upset an animal’s GI system. Diarrhea can sometimes be fixed with a bland diet, but occasionally medication is necessary. An appointment should be scheduled and a fecal checked.

Should I give HeartWorm prevention year-round or seasonally?

You may choose to give HW prevention year-round to protect against intestinal parasites through the winter too.

How long after putting on frontline can my dog be in water/bathe?

You should not bathe your dog 2 days before and after applying the flea and tick prevention.

What months should I give flea/tick prevention?

Flea and tick prevention should be applied April through November. However, you can use flea/tick prevention year-round for additional protection if your pet is at high risk in the winter.

Why should I bring in a fecal sample every 6-12 months?

You can't normally see intestinal parasites with the naked eye. no single dewormer will treat every intestinal parasite. Some intestinal parasites can be transferred to humans and cause disease. Therefore we recommend that you check a stool sample every 6-12 months.

How soon can I spay/neuter my pet?

Animals can be spayed or neutered at 5-6 months or at the veterinarian’s discretion.

How soon can I declaw my cat?

Declaws can be done when the animal is 4 lbs or at the veterinarians discretion.

Why is my cat urinating outside the box?

Urinating outside the box, straining to urinate, and frequent urination can be a sign your cat may have a urinary tract infection. A urine sample should be collected by you or the veterinarian and a cytology should be done to look for infection or crystals. Medication and/or diet can correct the problem.

When should I start taking my puppy/kitten to the vet?

Your first visit to the vet should be within one week of adoption or purchase. The puppy/ kitten should get a physical health check and a fecal screen at this appointment. Vaccinations should be started at 8 weeks.
